Students with the Workforce PhD Program Enjoy Tour of Sewon America in Rincon

Seniors from all three Effingham County high schools recently completed a four-day immersive experience into the world of local industry, career readiness, and real-world skills through the annual Workforce PhD program. Now in its fifth year, the program celebrated its largest graduating class to date, over 30 students, reflecting continued growth and strong interest among students preparing to enter the workforce.

“We’re especially proud to see this program continue to grow and reach more students each year,” said Todd Wall, CEO of Effingham College and Career Academy. “Experiences like Workforce PhD are critical in helping students build the skills and confidence they need to succeed, while showing them the real opportunities that exist right here in Effingham County.”

Throughout the week, students developed resumes, practiced interview techniques, and strengthened essential soft skills needed to succeed in today’s workforce. Participants also engaged in sessions focused on financial literacy, professional communication, and expectations for the transition from high school to full-time employment. A highlight of the program remained the “Where Are They Now” panel, featuring Workforce PhD alumni who shared their experiences and offered practical advice on entering the workforce.

Students also had the opportunity to tour several major employers in the area, gaining firsthand exposure to modern industry and career pathways available within Effingham County. This year’s site visits included AeroDynamic Aviation, Aertssen Logistics, DHL, Edwards Interiors, Georgia Pacific, MEDLOG, and Sewon America.

“My favorite part of the Workforce PhD program was touring the facilities and seeing what goes on right here in my community,” said Kaylee White, Senior at South Effingham High School. “I also really valued the life skills we learned, like how to give a proper handshake, develop an elevator speech, and be better prepared for life after high school.

The program culminated in a speed networking event, where students connected directly with industry representatives and applied the skills they developed throughout the week. Participating companies included AeroDynamic Aviation, Aertssen Logsitics, Georgia Pacific, Georgia Ports Authority, Gulfstream, HMGMA, MEDLOG, Sewon America, and Silver Lake Automation.

“My favorite part of the Workforce PhD program was meeting all of the big shots at the industries and getting to speak directly with them about their companies and what they are looking for in an employee,” said Jarrod King, Senior at Effingham County High School. “I was also surprised at all of the opportunities that are out there and available within industry in Effingham County.”

The Workforce PhD program remains a cornerstone initiative, supported by strong partnerships with local industry and a curriculum focused on practical career preparation, helping Effingham County students build successful futures in the workforce.

“Each year, we continue to see the impact this program has not only on students, but also on our existing industries,” said Jessica Hood, Vice President of the Effingham County Industrial Development Authority. “Workforce PhD creates meaningful connections between students and employers while reinforcing the strong talent pipeline we have here in Effingham County.”

The Workforce PHD initiative, developed in 2021, aims to identify high school students interested in entering the workforce directly after graduation, providing support and resources to develop essential skills like resume writing and interview techniques. The acronym PHD, which stands for Prepared, Hard-working, and Dedicated, highlights the qualities the program aims to cultivate. Through guidance and assistance, the initiative better prepares students for successful transitions into the workforce, ensuring they have the necessary tools and knowledge to pursue their career goals effectively. The program is a partnership between the Effingham County Industrial Development Authority, Effingham County School District, Savannah Technical College, and local industrial employers, aiming to offer students seeking immediate entry into the workforce the same level of support as college-bound students.
